Are You Supporting Your Body’s Natural Biorhythm or Working Against It?

How in tune are you with your body’s natural biorhythm?

If you’re a night owl, do you ever have to drag yourself out of bed in the morning?

If you’re a morning person, do you ever have to muster up the energy to get through an evening event?

Most of us have constraints that require us to do certain things during set hours during the day, and that’s just an unfortunate part of living in the modern world.

But what about the parts of day that you do control?

Are you honoring your body’s natural rhythm and tackling big creative tasks when you’re feeling most energized?

I’m an out of the box farm girl and uber morning person. I function best, in fact, when I go to sleep around 9pm and wake around 5am. I absolutely love that early morning hour. Through dawn’s silence, I light incense, brew coffee, and listen to the birds starting to sing.

Because of this, evening events are hard for me. I have to muster up the energy, and I literally fear events that get me home past 10pm.

As a coach living in Brussels with many clients in the U.S., I’ve been carving out time for coaching in the evenings. I’ve done this because I want to be available for my U.S.-based clients, and I want to accomodate their schedules.

I’ve also held the belief that, “If I don’t make myself available, I’ll lose clients.”

Because coaching is energizing for me, it hasn’t been too much of a problem. But still when an evening coaching session, webinar, or teleclass roles around, I sometimes have to spend the whole day pumping myself up to take the call.

I chose 7pm as the time to hold my webinars because the entire coaching and consulting community holds their webinars and teleclasses at this time because that’s when most of the world can participate.

The problem with 7pm is that’s Freya’s bed time and when my natural biorhythm really starts to shut down and I just want to snuggle up under a blanket with a good book and a cup of tea.

But instead of adjusting to my personal circumstances and biorhythm, I’ve been forcing myself to adhere to the industry standard out of fear that I might lose people.

Then I asked myself, “What’s more important: losing a few people or creating at a time when I feel at my absolute best?”

The answer was a clear: creating at a time when I feel my absolute best.

To that end, I’d like to announce that from now on my webinars will take place on Wednesdays at 10am EST / 4pm CET. Of course, 4pm doesn’t feel as good to me as 5am, but it feels SO MUCH BETTER than 7pm.

I’ve decided it’s time for me to make an effort to protect my evening time. It’s a delicate, low energy time for me. I don’t nap well, I don’t sleep in, so for me to feel rested I have to go to bed early. The less I fight that, and the more I embrace it, the better I sleep, create, and show up in the world.

What about you? Is there an area in your life where you’re forcing yourself to show up when you just want to be under the covers? Or is it possible that you are underutilizing your peak performance time?

I challenge you to try one tweak this week to get more in tune with your body’s natural biorythm? Move a class, go to bed earlier, get up earlier, experiment, see how it feels. Report back by leaving a comment on the blog.

We were born to maneuver through cycles. Although our cycles follow the sun, the moon, and the Earth’s rotation, we also have an internal rhythm that is unique for each person. Honor that cycle when you can.

To you, uncorked, XOXO
